Self catering breaks and B&B in Madeira, Portugal
The retreat will be held at Villa Palmeira, located in the Santa Luzia area of Funchal, which is a quiet residential neighbourhood, with loads of amenities on the doorstep. The Villa is a 5 bedroom property that took a year to completely renovate, mixing a flavour of modern whilst keeping as much of the beautiful 1920's typical features. It offers plenty of open spaces in the garden and patio to relax and enjoy the stunning uninterupted views of the city and Marina below with the surrounding area of Monte to the rear. It is a 10 minute walk into downtown and the Marina and is on a direct bus route with the bustop at the end of the drive.
The Villa sits on its own plot of 6002m, there are two levels to the property, the entrance with parking for 3 cars behind electric gates, along with a herb garden, storage area and small cottage. The house sits above this with a large garden patio filled with shrubs and flowers and a large Miradouro (viewing platform) that boasts an amazing view over Funchal and a fantastic area to watch the cruise ships when they come into the Marina.
There are 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a wc, laundry room, large kicthen, living room and balcony. Just off the kicthen is a large covered patio area with seating for 12 people.
There are between 5 and 8 spaces for the retreat. The house can sleep up to 10, but a maximum of 8 is ideal for the retreat. bedroom options are as follows and are offered on a first come first serve basis with the exception of the ground floor with ensuite - which would be offered to someone who has problems with mobility.
Double ground floor room with a small ensuite shower room
Double, front view of Funchal and Marina with side view of the Quinta grounds next door.
Double, side view of the Quinta grounds next door
Single for 2 - adult size bunk beds, partial city view
Single for 2 - Single bed that can be converted to a double - View of Funchal and Marina
A large family bathroom with a tub and shower is on the first floor, a large family bathroom is on the ground floor with wetroom/Jacuzzi shower. A wc links off the kitchen and to the garden, and the en suite to the first floor bedroom also has a jacuzzi shower unit.
Wifi is available throughout the house, with cable and internet TV in the lounge.
The intention of the retreat is to provide a week for a small group of like minded Lyme suffers who would like to relax and unwind in a supportive group atmosphere, alongside participating in some fun and manageable activites, rest and relaxation whilst soaking up some sun and the healing energies of the island! The week will be structured so that participants can enjoy some private time without the pressure of participation in group, housekeeping and some meals will be provided, so that retreaters can retreat from the day to day pressures of normal home life!
As your host and also a Lymie, I understand the needs of providing an environment where we can enjoy the support from a group whilst using the experience - with space given to each individual for private time and hopefully some healing!
This is a guideline as the Yoga, Meditation and therapies will be scheduled nearer the retreat date.
Day one: Arrival at Villa Palmeira, welcome drink and room allocation. During the evening a home cooked meal will be provided for the group - an ideal opportunity to meet and make freinds with everyone. (Special diets can be catered for - menu will be agreed upon before you arrive to ensure that everyone has something to eat).
Day two to six: Breakfast, meditiation and yoga sessions for those who want to participate. Massage, hot stone therapy and reflexology amongth other suggested treatments can be booked during this time. During one of the afternoons, an introduction into aromatherpy with a session in making some creams and lotions to take home. Free time to go and explore the island, or city or to relax and unwind at the villa. A couple of organised day trips can be organised for the group and I will supply more information about this as I secure some discounted rates from my contacts....
On the final evening depending on the weather we will have a BBQ, if weather does not permit, we will enjoy a home cooked meal together.
Day 7: Our final breakfast before leaving for the airport.
The cost per person is 400 GBP and includes:
* Accomodation (private room) for 7 nights on a B&B basis - breakfast will consist of tea, coffee, fruit juices, fresh fruit, selection of yoghurts, cereals, selection of jams, bread/rolls/toast, eggs, cheese, ham and pate. (please let me know if you have any special dierty requirements).
* Towels and bedlinen provided, with a daily maid who will come in and make beds and keep the communal areas clean and tidy.
* Two evening meals - first and last night. Home cooked healthy meals made with fresh ingredients and organic where possible (some will come from our own herb garden, which is organic)..dietry requirements can be catered for and prior to arrival, menus will be sent out to ensure that everyone can enjoy a meal together with something they can eat!
* Fresh fruit, hot and cold drinks, bottled water available throughout each day. For those who can tolerate alcohol, a trust bar will be available during the evenings.
* 2 sessions of meditation and/or yoga (the itnerary for this will be given nearer the retreat date. The yoga teacher will assume that everyone is a beginner and will be offering gentle sessions as an introduction.
* An afternoon with an introduction into Aromatherapy with a session of making some creams and lotions out of natural ingredients, to take home. All materials are included.
Please note, the yoga and meditation will be included in the package, but are based on who is interested in participating. Extra therapies, such as massage, hot stone therapy, refelxology are not included but can be booked and paid for separately.
If you would like to bring your partner or a freind and share your room, the rate for the extra person is 350 GBP. There are 3 double bedrooms and 2 singles - couples will be allocated the doubles on a first come first serve basis.
Extra activities can be arranged if you want to make use of your time spent in Madeira. Also some evening meals in local restaurants can be arranged for the group (I am negotiating discounts) and will post them as they come in.
Flights from the UK are regular from most airports around the country. EasyJet, BA, TAP, Thomson, Jet 2 and Monarch all operate flights to Madeira: The new airport is now called Christiano Ronaldo Airport. Monday is the busiest day and most flights operate on that day, which is why the retreat runs from Monday to Monday.
Airport transfers to the villa are not included, but can be organised. If some of you come in on the same flight I can organise transport and that cost can be shared between you. The aerobus costs 5 euros to Funchal, a taxi will cost around 25 euros to the house. Hiring a car is also a good option, especially if you want to visit other places around the island.
It is advisable to take out holiday insurance and don't forget your EU health card. A visit to the doctor can typically cost around 60 euros. A&E is free, but to receive treatment you will need your card.
There are so many things to do in Madeira that you will find it hard to see everything in a week. Here are some ideas of activities that can be arranged if you would like to have a more active retreat.
Whale and Dolphin watching
Cable Car to Monte and Monte Palace Gardens
Jeep off road Safari
Canyoning and Pot holing
Madeira wine tasting
Island tours and site seeing
and much much more!
